Yankton Church Damaged In Early-Morning Fire

YANKTON (AP) — A Yankton church has been heavily damaged in an early morning fire.Yankton Assistant Fire Chief Larry Nickels says crews found flames from the administrative office area of St. John’s Lutheran Church when they arrived around 3 a.m. Saturday. Some 65 firefighters from Yankton, Lesterville, Gayville and Vermillion fought the blaze, which inflicted heavy fire and smoke damage. Church members plan to hold a single service Sunday morning at nearby Mount Marty College. Authorities have not yet determined a cause.

Carol Lynn Horacek was born on Saturday, June 9, 1945 at Lake Andes, South Dakota to Walter and Josephine (Sejnoha) Engel. She graduated from Lake Andes High School in 1963. She worked at Sullivan Manufacturing in Sioux Falls for several years. Carol enjoyed being around children and enjoyed her job as a cook and custodian for Bon Homme School, where she was employed for 18 years. She married Charles Horacek on November 16, 1985 in Tyndall. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and sang with the church choir. She was also a member of the Tyndall V.F.W. Auxiliary. Carol’s enjoyments in life included animals, polka music and dancing. Carol passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2009 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Tyndall at the age of 63 years, 9 months and 13 days.

Carol’s memory will be cherished by her husband, Charlie, of Tyndall; two children: Roy Lee Schrank of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Melissa Schrank of Denver, Colorado; two grandchildren: Matthew Schrank and LeRoy Schrank; and one brother, William Engel of Sioux Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Edward Engel and a sister, Lila Cap.

Kuchen Day

We were treated to another day of learning in the kitchen ... how to make kuchen by Marilyn Stolz. Yum!! I'm pleased to report they are actually much less complicated to prepare then we previously believed. I mean she kept saying they would be, but can we really trust Marilyn? :P

Plus ... oh there's more ... Lorraine Sorenson treated us to a lesson on cake decorating during our "down time". Just so you know, little frosting roses taste delish no matter how rosie they actually look. In fact the more .. ahem .. mistakes you make, the more you get to lick off your fingers eat.

Elsie Waller (with the assistance of Linda Pesek) kindly agreed to host a how-to-make-kolaches day on February 21, 2009. Much was eaten learned as 25 dozen kolaches made their way from flour and yeast to fruity freezer fillers.
